Xbox 360: Good Arcade games
« on: 08 April, 2011, 15:52:39 »
Just thought I'd start the ball rolling with some Xbox 360 Arcade games (the downloadable kind).
The points I have listed as 2 numbers, the number outside the brackets is what they charge, the number in brackets is what I actually think it is probably worth paying for it, assuming you like those kinds of games that is :P.

Castle Crashers
Description: A side scrolling fighting game.
Points: 1200 (800)
Multi-Player: 2-4 Local and Live
Overview: Its a fun game with straight forward control system, a collection of characters, pets and weapons to unlock.  As you go through you gain XP and levels and can spend points on 4 different skills enabling you to modify a character to the play style you prefer.
There are a few annoying factors that these kind of games are prone to that they could have avoided (like enemies able to walk out the edges of the screen) given the history, but they don't tend to break the fun all that much.
About the only game I have found on Arcade that I think is actually worth the 1200 point cost and the demo gives a good overview of how the game will play out over its entirety.
Edit: Scrap that; with the changes they have made (incedentially making the game even harder for some reason), making some sections close to impossible unless you can juggle or have the perfect build.  The game is less fun, and likely worth only 600-800 points.  Its less suited to casual players and more in the realm of hardcore gamers.

Age of Booty
Description: RTS-ish game where you control a pirate ship and battle against other pirates.
Points: 400 (400) - was originally 800
Multi-Player: 1-4 Local, 1-8 Live
Overview: Fun little game, most missions you are trying to take over towns before your opponents do or simply steal them off your opponents, once they have done the hard work for you.
In most single player missions you have a AI controled ally, they aren't all that clever (frustratingly so at times) but they can make for good distractions.
Towns give resources that you can use to upgrade your (or your allies) ship.
You never really are completely out in this game as when you die you simply re spawn back at your lair, and leave some resources where you died.
Demo gives a basic overview of the game without any real challenge though.

Castlevania: Symphony of Night
Description: Platformer where you take the role of a vampire out to defeat Dracula.
Points: 800 (600)
Multi-Player: None
Overview: Good fun platformer, ported over from the Playstation one .
You play the vampire Alucard in this one, giving you a number of powers as you level up (leveling just makes you tougher with no ability to allocate).  It plays much like previous castlevania games, and the story is similar to boot.  You can save as you go along as its a reasonably lengthy playthrough for a platformer.
If you really like other Castlevania games or even similar platformers 800 points is worth while though 400-600 is likely better if your not a decent fan of these kind of long term platform games.
