[session 0 - pre story]

July 3066
Northern districts of New Carbonear, Baccalieu

Calvin ray got out of the car the had picked him up and dropped him off out the front of the Tech Wizards headquarters north of New Carboneer. It was surrounded by junk yards with piles running to three stories in night, cranes, recycling furnaces and the sound of heavy machinery. The first three floors were wide and dark filling a city block, springing forth from this base was a tall round needle of office floors reaching up about 20 stories into the sky. The black stone and glass building was like some archaic wizards tower in a jungle of metal.

It was austentacious and stylish at the same time, much like its owner. He walked up to the door of the foyer and waited.
"Welcome to the Wizards tower Mr Ray" the building announced as it opened the door. He stepped out of the warm noisy air into the cool dim structure as the door closed behind him. The heavily tinted glass gave the street outside a faded and unreal look, he turned as the gentle hum of a drone caught his attention and a light from above lit the area ahead.
"Please follow the light and all will be revealed" announced the same pleasant voice, this time from above.
"Man Scoggin you take this style thing way to seriously..." he murmured. The building didn't talk back, he expected it too.
He follow the light through what seemed to be a large office foyer, past a rung of elevator doors, then in the distance some doors opened to let in a blinding white like like some door to the afterlife.
Of course, more style, his eyes had adjusted to the dark light so of course it seemed like the light of heaven.

He stepped through to a massive chamber polished black walls, lined with glass and lit like a temple, the walls lined with four battlemech on each side. Like some guardians of old they started small and increasing in size towards the back.
"Man this guy is loaded"
The rotor drone was visible now, it descended and spoke "Mr Scoggin says these units are not for you, these are our sales models for the discerning buyer, your cat that is as heavy as the worlds oceans awaits beyond" it sounded cryptic.
"This way please" it sang as it moved to the other end of the chamber.
He followed.

The first two guardians standing either side of him were both Commandos, 25 tons of Lyran engineering. The one on his right seemed to be a standard 2D configuration with 10 SRMs and a medium laser. He had fought many and they carried a powerful Alpha. The opposite one was a 4H, mounting two medium Lasers and bristling with 60 single shot rocket launchers. Cheap, nasty and effective, much more in character with Periphery sensibilities.

Next two in line was a Vindicator, the Capalan birds mech that was akin to a camel. The horse designed by committee, functional, deadly, but ugly as sin. Next to it, he stopped. Whistled long and stared. A Liberater stood strong and proud, painted undercoat green and slightly blocky, but functional. It looked like Scoggin had altered the configuration slightly, replaceing the wrist LRMs with Rockets. "Hey robot, this one mine, your boss had hinted I may get the proceeds of our work as my reward." He said as he pointed at the mech.
"This model common is for the diserning buyer, your cat is the gift of the Wizard himself"
Ray rolled his eyes, "Seriously Scoggin! Ok, robot, lead on"
Next up, woah, a Huron Warrior, it seemed standard configuration too, gauss rifle and all. Quite the sight, well outside his price range. Across a 4H Hunchback stood silently, he had seen them in action up close on their last battle with the Lancers on Kendal. Aurelius' had crushed a Commando literally with his bare hands. Severing its leg through to its crotch with the AC 20 before crushing its torso into its legs with a slam from his fists from above. Brutal.

Finally, a Thunderbolt, 65 Tons of serious metal stood to one side, and an Atlas, 100 tons of pure death stood on the other. It stalled his stride. It was like waking between Thor and Death. Discerning buyers indeed, there was enough firepower in this room alone to nicely fit out a company size force, invade some backwater world and live like a king for the rest of your life.

Finally he reached the end door and stepped through. This room was less sales yard and more workshop. Large with bays to fit four mechs, two on either sides and one large hanger bay door was open at the far end. Two of the bays had Liberators in them and a third had Jörmungandr itself, Scogins 75 ton Marauder and personal ride. In the middle a black tent had been set up with what appeared to be comfortable seating, drinks and refreshments. He approached and saw a seat was taken. As he reached the pavilion he saw it was Tania, his old friend. She was sipping a glass of champaign and wearing a navy blue dress.

"Tania!" He said with more surprise than he meant, she smiled, he felt awkward.
"Um, nice dress" she stood up, leant over and kissed him on the cheek.
"You mean better than seeing me in the bathers I normally wear in that pod of mine" she winked.
He blushed. Seeing her in an elegant dress like this was more alluring he had to admit than the coolant vest and short pants he was used to seeing.
She pointed at the Liberators, "some serious hardware there, look closely at that central weapon mount." He looked closely where she had pointed. In place of the central large laser these units had two.
"How is that even possible" she turned and pointed at the other mech in the bay.
"I think it's one of those Binary Lasers he mounts on that Dragon of his" "Jörmungandr you mean" he cut in reflexively. "Yeah you boys and naming your toys" she reached over and grabbed another champaign glass and passed it to him, "cheers" they clinked glasses, stared into each other's eyes and sipped.

A door opened, Scoggin strode in his arms wide in a generous pose, wearing his black robes and trapping of his senatorial status.
"My friends thank you for coming and your patients over these last two months."
He shook both of their hands with vigour and seemed excited.
"As you can both see I have the mechs I promised each of you in return for you efforts" they glanced at each other uncertainly.
"Ray, for assisting in recovering an intact DI, and Tania for access to Ironmounger gyro technology". He grabbed their hands and walked them over, to the mechs.
"The space saved by the more compact gyro alows me to fit a Blazer rifle into the centre torso." From the front he pointed up at the distinctive twin barrel laser pointing out from the centre torso. He walked them under the unit towards the back, and pointed up at some large vent outputs on each of the side torsos. "To mitigate the massive het output of the Blazer I have mounted twin Active Coolant  heat sinks, still not as good as the ones you get in the inner sphere but cheaper, more repairable and available for our needs"
He walked them around the sides, "Finally she has a set of 10 tube Rockets on each arm, I had the space and they tend to come in handy. I call her the Lynx, designation LIB-LX. they are both prototypes based of Jörmungandr over there, but Cumming in at only 40 tons. Questions?
"When do we get to try them out?" questioned Ray, "Damn strait" shot Tania.
"Right now if you would like, change rooms over there, the trail yard is setup and ready to go." Scoggin pointed to small room near the mechs with two suit and neurohelmets hanging from the wall. Tania set off in a run "race you!", Ray couldn't help it and gave chase. Scoggin smiled turned and strolled over to Jörmungandr, and started climbing the gantry. Time to see what his latest inventions could do.

[Session 1]

Iacinthina Starport
Valerius
Marian Hedgemony
August 3066

Valerius, the bright jewel the government campaign had declared. "Bright jewel my ass" declared Patrician Cicero O'Donnell.

He stood up from his tent, intent to take a stroll, his dropship was late.

Cicero stretched as he stood, years of working for the administraition and running a small warehousing business had bound him to a desk and his back had suffered for it. But it was work that had made him wealthy and with this wealth he had purchased a future for his six children, and that future was called status.

He was of average height, slightly on the larger side of portly, with greying hair. He had never thought to tone up too much, his largess displayed his wealth in a most dignified manor. Still a nice stroll now and then helped him feel more alive.

Immediately a dutifully slave approached, silintly handing him his wide-brimmed hat and eyeguards. He never liked to wear them inside, but outside they were damn near essential.

The eyeguards themselves were a local design, designed to keep out the heavy blue to violet spectrum light that pierced Veleriuses atmosphere so easily. Offworld sunglasses were too small and lacked sufficient polorisation for local use, this made it easy to spot offworlders. He stepped out into the arid field and looked up into the sky, clear of clouds it still took some getting used to seeing its purple weight hang over him, he still could not shake its opressive mood having come from Alphards pristine blue skies.

In the distance the sun was setting shedding its blue-white light over the field. Being of a larger class F spectral class it emmited more high spectrum light than the class G's most humans were used to, what little plant life existed on the planets used blue clorophil making for a strangely colored vista of blues and purples.

The field was little more than baked earth cleared of rocks, his first set of slaves had seen to the clearing, machinery was hard to come by and expensive. Most of his fortune had been spent buying this land and elevating himself to Patrician status.

Note - what was the rest of this story, what was his delivery, why was it so special? Overall it's an intro story. But I need to link it somewhat to the campaign goal. Maybe show how tight security is?

On the horizon a military vehicle drove down the only road to his landing strip. He looked back at his scorched line of rocks, one day he would pave it and make it a grand space port. The jeep continued to approach kicking up a cloud of fine rock behind it, dust too was hard to come by on Valerius.

A familiar face stepped out of the jeep, their local militia commander Miles Probatus Paul Connor. Tall and presented in well pressed armor and uniform and proudly displaying his polished sidearm in a well made leather holster O'Donnel recognised as imported by his shipments. A friend.

"Miles Probatus" he said, as though unconcerned.
"Senator" he saluted. A good man he was indeed thought ODonnel, always recognising his station.
He continued "We have a complication with the shipment sir."
"A complication you say, do continue" O'Donnel let real concern slip into his voice.
"Our surveillance satellites at both zenith and nadir points in the system detected multiple emergence waves, after which they were destroyed. Comstar has since confirmed multiple dropship drive plumes incoming. We have about 14 days till planetfall."

"And what of my shipment. It was supposed to arrive today, is it not in system?"
"No sir, it was held back at Alphard to fill its jump slots, it should be arriving today"
"Today!" He shouted, now gravely concerned, the Miles cringed. "We don't have a problem" he said poking the taller soldier in his armoured torso. "You have a problem, that ship and her captain cost me a fortune to keep on retainer." He kept poking for effect.
"We all benefit from its shipments. What are You going to do about it." He paused to let the shaken Miles speak.

"Um, but, sir, they are invading us. The Legatus said to tell you to seek safety and use your bunker. He will handle keeping you safe."
"As our dropship is blown from the sky, not happening. Here is what is happening." He held out his hand as his dutiful slave handed him a spare noteputer.

"I am declaring an emergence, the Legatis will kindly grant me full access to all Comstar transmission frequencies." The Miles went to interrupt him but he kept talking "and when our ship arrives I will tell them to not undock and return to Alphard. Nobody fires on jumpships so as long as they don't undock our goods are safe." He finished typing the proclamation and handed it to the Miles. "Now do go along and hand this to the Legatus, I need to prepare my bunker and staff for the coming invasion. Tell the legatus I will be in touch and expect assistance during this trying time."

The Miles Propatus saluted, crisply turned and got back into his jeep. He drove off leaving the Senator standing looking up to the sky. Multiple emergence waves he had said. This would be the first trial of Valarius, could it stand up to an invasion the likes of this. He stood staring up to the sky for time time deep in thought.

[Session 2]

Valerius system nadir point
Buccaneer-class DropShip "The Sapphire"

Laura's head spun. The jump turbulence cleared in a swirling blur of noise and light. Alarms blazed as her stomachs inverted feeling caused her to vomit involuntarily. Peacefully the contents floated out landing mostly over her consol. She wasn't alone in her feeling as she heard from in front of the cabin but was unable to determine who it was through her spinning vision. Closing her eyes, she reached under her command chair armrest. Fumbling about she found what she was looking for, yanked the med pack out, opened it and pulled out a TDS Stim auto-injector. She had not used them since her early life in space travel and never as a captain.
She placed the auto tube against her skin letting the little device administer its payload. Her vision started to slow down the swirling motion. Her head cleared. Outside the windows of her Buccaneer-class DropShips bridge she saw space, black space. Her thoughts, while cloudy, registered the obvious. Some form of jump incident had befallen them but they had cleared back into normal space. Leaning forward in her captains chair she wipped her arm sleave across the consol.
Two hours since jump, "Impossible!" Laura exclaimed. Jumps took seconds not hours.
She switched off the alarm. "Sweet mercy! thanks to whoever got that off" declared her navigator. She pushed off into the cabin. Not being under thrust put her in a zero-g environment. She maneuvered over to him and pulled out another stim, injected him and waited to give him time to settle. Her operations officer seemed unconscious, she checked for a pulse, but alive. She righted her in the chair and strapped her harnes on to keep her airways clear. The operations consol showed most systems for the buccaneer-class dropship were operational but several systems were rebooting.
Her Comms board flicked active she went back to her chair to see who it was. The transmission data packet had a timing error, 6 hours earlier then her Terran standard systems clock.
She activated the channel bringing the terse face of another captain into her comm panel screen. Before she had a chance to say anything they spoke,
"Captain Seraphina I order you to immediately undock your vessel from the Splendida Victoria". It was Xu, captain of the Leopard-class DropShip Ex cathedra that had accompanied them on the journey to this frontier of Hedgmony space.
"Um, what just happened?" she asked back.
"No time for chit chat captain, detach!" Xu, while profoundly rude, also wore military colours and was on a military ship, so she could only assume that an attack was imminent, old training kicked in through the fuzz of her brain. She opened channel to the jumpship bridge to initiate undocking procedures but got silence.
"I'm not getting the bridge Captain Xu
"You won't" Xu looked down and appeared to be typing something into her chair.
"I just gave override access, you have control of the clamp, get her off the tether". True to her word lights went green across her boards. Her engineers must have been busy as her power systems had been progressively tracking to full power in the interim.
She saw her Navigator starting up the flight systems.
"Koru you ok over there?" She asked him.
"Yeah yeah mess did the trick, just don't tell anyone I needed em ok? All systems ready, should I take her out Captain?"
"Do it" she gave the order.
Metal clicked, the hull vibrated as the Sapphires maneuvering drives pushed her away from the jumpship under her belly.
"Put a little spin on her once we are in drift Koru"
"Will do" he replied back pinching in orders to the ships navigation systems. Slowly they drifted. Small pings of metal impacted the hull, debris. "Captain Xu we are getting exit debris here!"
"Yeah yeah hold steady, your doing fine, it's just the other debris cloud your moving past. Nothing big, I already checked, no bodies either"
"Bodies!" She exclaimed.
"Stay steady, your safe Captain"
Her ship stared a slow rotation, bringing the jumpship into view. She was a Marchant class, a long needle in space capable of jumping up to 30 light years in the brink of an eye, she could take two dropships with her nestled on docking tethers. Normally a steel grey in colour the mid section of the ship was scorched and burned, bits of loose panel and debris had floated slowly out. Most of her owed was down but lights showed in the crew area.
"My god" she exclaimed out loud, to many surprises. Her comm channel replied, she must have left it open.
"Stay focused Captain Laura, and before you ask they are fine, fine enough. This system is under attack as you are aware, and we have orders"
Another voice spoke from the side. Then another face appeared on the channel. He looked military, official, and spoke with authority.
"This is Principes Marcus Aurelius the third of the 197th Comitatensis Maniple, we have orders from your employer to escort you in system given there are hostiles in transit to Valerius" her boss must have pulled some strings.
"Thank you Principes, that will be appreciated in the current situation, but you make it sound like the attack is underway, when we jumped out of Lordinax the..." He cut her off
"There has been an incident during the jump and..." Xu cut him off "and we will discuss spacial theory in transit." She could tell the nice Pricipies was staring her down.
"I'm sending flight orders, follow them, we can chit chat when underway, Xu out" Aurelius held the channel open.
"Any questions Captain Laura?" she gave it some though.
"Not at this stage, let's get underway and when we are in transit we can talk more, this system has a transit time of fifteen days so we will have lots of time me to talk." he smiled, which felt strangely reassuring.
The two dropships came about spinning on their axis to orient their top side to face the planet, then their underbelly drives systems flared to life pushing them to a massive 1G acceleration.
They were underway.
