WFRP 2ed - rethinking monsters
« on: 05 January, 2012, 10:15:01 »
Ok, 3 attacks for trolls! 5 for giants and 27 for the hydra! Ok I jest about the hydra.

My point is we have had longstanding issues with the conversion of attacks from the WFB tabletop war game to the RPG.

In light of the new 40k RPG traits of unnatural characteristic and size. How would I rethink some basic beasties.

First - I don't want to apply this to basic races - I don't want orcs with unnatural toughness and elves with unnatural agility.

So the troll.... A good starting point. Unnatural... Strength - yes. All distriptions discuss their strength. But toughness - no - and they have regeneration to cover this. Size - hulking - +10 to be hit and -10 to conceal. Agility as move ??? Could be done. Lower strength a little so the brute career soul not take it to a SB of 6. Lower attacks to 1.

Ok this looks like:
WS: 37
BS: 15
S: (8 ) 43
T: (4) 48
AG: (2) 20
IN: (1) 18
WP: (2) 27
FL: (1) 10

Attacks: 1
Wounds: 30
Move: 6 (if I used size would need a speed boost trait)
Traits: fearless, frightening, natural weapons, night vision, size (hulking), SWG (two-handed), unnatural strength
Special: regeneration, stoopid, vomit

Hits like a brick, about as smart as one. Less attack spam.

Ok, size trait and Halflings and Goblins.

Halflings and goblins are about 2/3 the height/mass of a human. 3-4 foot where humans are 5-6.

The size trait combat adjustments are really significant at 10%. So, like unnatural characteristic, I don't want to hand it out too freely. I see the size trait as literal doubling or halving of the mass and/or height of a creature.

Given this neither Halflings or Goblins would be size (scrawny). There stats would remain as is.

Ogres

There big, smelly and like to eat.

Size accounts vary, but weight is more than double. So I'm going with hulking.

By all accounts they should have unnatural toughness. The can digest anything, take blows unarmored and shrug them off, have hardy constitutions etc...

But unnatural strength... I think not - would give them strike mighty blow as a racial talent instead.

Also Andy Law mentioned that creatures of a larger size will always win/ get bonus in a contested STR test. Need to look into that. As it is the larger sizes are almost penalties.

In return for this ogres would drop down to 1 attack.

Yea, extra attacks are there to make them dangerous, and all one heavy hit is likely to still do less damage than multiple hits too but does make the risk factor good.

Unnatural stats fit 40k better, as your more looking at genetically enhanced, technologically enhanced or evolved races having been in wars over many generations, it makes sense.

Well the ogre thing always was a bit odd that the challenge system wasn't used, an ogre arm wrestling a human is going to find it easy (+20%) while the human vs the ogre is going to find it quite hard (-20%), so all in all there is a slim chance of a human beating an ogre.  Though there is a chance the ogre may just rip the humans arm off in the process.
